I almost got banned before I learned how to really use it

I have recently discovered a social platform that makes me completely crazy. Despite my annoyances, I can't stay off of Reddit. This is not exactly a user friendly platform and it is easy to get banned.

But, I haven't gotten banned yet.

I know that I am not exactly selling you on Reddit yet but it really is a platform that you should be spending time on.

Here are three ways that I recommend bloggers use Reddit:

  1. Use Reddit for Research
  2. Use Reddit to find a community
  3. Answer questions on Reddit to become known in a field

What is Reddit?

I think that Mashable described it best

Simply put, Reddit is a message board wherein users submit links. What differentiates it from a real-time information network like Twitter is that the stream of content is curated by the community. Items of value are “upvoted,” and those deemed unworthy are "downvoted." This determines a post's position on the site, and items that hit the front page are seen by hundreds of thousands of people (consequently, sending boatloads of traffic to the linked website). ~Mashable

The interesting thing about Reddit is that it includes all of these individual communities. Each community has a unique set of rules. It is crucial that you actually read the rules of a community before you post in it.

For example, if you just do a drop and leave it link to your latest blog post and it is against the rules of that Sub Reddit, you may get banned.

Frequently asked questions

Reddit has a terrific F.A.Q. That I highly recommend that you scan.

You will want to create an Reddit account.

The advantage of having a Reddit account is that you can keep track of conversations that you are in the midst of and you can get an upvote score.

What is an upvote?

It is a way to get a "karma" score on a post that you have shared. I like to think of upvotes as retweets. It essentially means that someone likes what you shared.

It can also be used to determine the position of your post on the site. In theory, the more upvotes that you get, the more people are likely to see your post.

Use Reddit for blog research

Considering the amount of daily activity and legacy data on Reddit, it is a wonderful place for blog research.

Step 1: Have a topic idea

Step 2: Open Reddit.com

Step 3: Type in your topic idea in the search field

Step 4: Hit Enter on your keyboard

use reddit as a blog research tool

At this point you will have quite a few options.

Option 1: Scroll around and look for a headline that interest you. If you find one, click on it and read.

Option 2: Sort by relevance.

Option 3: Sort by timeframe.

Once you find a headline that interest you, click on the comments. Clicking on the comments instead of the headline will assure that you stay inside Reddit.

When people are posting on Reddit, there is an option for the click to take you directly to a website instead of a thread inside of Reddit.

reddit is a great tool for building community and for research

Once a thread has been clicked on you will be able to read the full thread including comments.

The thread that I clicked on is old and comments have expired. Therefore, I can not comment but I sure can read and learn.

Type of things that I am looking for in this thread:

1. Could I turn this into a blog post and answer questions?

2. Can I learn anything new that I could blog post about?

3. Does this inspire a new idea to blog post about?

Use Reddit to find community

Reddit is made of my micro communities and the odds are crazy high that you can find one about your topic. If you can't afford to join a community for your niche just yet, Reddit is a great substitute.

My suggestion is to find a few SubReddits that fit your niche. Once you find these SubReddits, spend some time interacting and getting to know other people in the community. Treat this like you would a Facebook group.

How to find a SubReddit?

1. Do a search in Reddit

2. Find the links that have /r/topic

3. Subscribe to the Sub Reddit

4. Get involved

How to find SubReddits again

The "My SubReddits" is a bit hidden on the site. Once you log into your Reddit, look over on the left and click on the down arrow. Then you will see all of the groups that you have joined. At this point you can click on one and see the latest conversations.

Note: Remember that you can sort according to date.

Answer Questions on Reddit to become known in your field.

My final tip on Reddit and blogging is to not be 'just a lurker.' Dive into the conversations and get involved. Answer questions and if you don't know the answer, spend some time and see if you can figure it out.

It is amazing how much traffic I get from Reddit when I get involved in the community aspect. It does take some getting accustomed to and it is not the most intuitive platform on the planet. However, it is a community of passionate people on a crazy amount of topics.

Get involved. Have fun. Make friends.
