Create a List of Posts by WordPress Category

The Problem:

Recently a client asked me to build him a blog that looked similar in nature to Reddit. At first, I honestly thought that the client was off base but the more we talked about it, the more that I came around to his way of thinking. I spend a great deal of time trying to design blogs that have magazine style look and feel or something that in the past I considered more pleasing to the eyes. Once he did convince me that this design would suit him well, I was left with the task of figuring out how to do it. In the slideshow below you are going to see what I normally design and what I designed for my client.

The Solution:

At first I thought that I could just do this easily by creating category pages but that was not the goal. He wanted all of his blog post on the front page by category and by latest post Title with just a text link or short description.

The WordPress Plugin that I used is WP Category Post List Widget to achieve the look of a list of blog posts by category.

WordPress plugin to create a list of post on one page.
Widget & Shortcode to list down posts filtered by Category, with Thumbnails, Custom HTML structure, Excerpt, CSS theme with API & much more

The How:

Below I will provide you the code for how to use this tool and get the look that I did. Also, there is a video that shows you how to find your category ID. The category ID is how WordPress and this plugin know how to talk to one another.

There are plenty of options for this plugin as you will see noted on the WordPress plugins page.

Here is the code that I used for each instance:

[ wp_cpl_sc cat_id=3 list_num=4 SHOW_COMMENTS=”true” css_theme=2 sticky_post=”79″]

[ wp_cpl_sc cat_id=2 list_num=4 SHOW_EXCERPT=”false” SHOW_COMMENTS=”true” css_theme=2 sticky_post=”79″]

How do you find the category ID?

  1. Hi Renee – Thanks for the tips! I’ve read several articles now on your blog. Can you tell me how to select multiple categories for your posts but have one category be the “main” category – mainly for thumbnail navigation purposes?? Does this make sense??

    1. Marcie,
You really just want to have one category per post. If you have more than one category selected, you are duplicating content. So what would be a good suggestion is to have multiple tags per blog post and one category. Does that make sense? Why do you want multiple categories; is it specific to your theme perhaps?
